Hunting with Inflatable Boats: A Guide for DIY Hunters
Your Gateway to the Ultimate Alaskan Backcountry Adventure
When it comes to big game hunting in Alaska, success often comes down to one key factor: access. The farther you can get from the beaten path, the better your odds of finding unpressured game. That’s where inflatable boats come in—and why they’ve become a game-changer for DIY hunters across the Last Frontier.
At Alaska Wild Rentals, we specialize in providing rugged, packable inflatable boats that are purpose-built for Alaska’s wild rivers, lakes, and remote terrain. Whether you’re chasing moose in the fall rut, glassing riverbanks for caribou, or floating your way into untouched bear country, our boats are the perfect way to go deeper, hunt smarter, and return safely.
Why Use an Inflatable Boat for Hunting?
- Portability: Our inflatable boats can be packed into a bush plane or stowed in your truck—making them ideal for fly-in hunts or drop-camps.
- Stealth: Glide silently down rivers or across backwater sloughs to glass game without disturbing the area.
- Access: Reach remote terrain that would be otherwise inaccessible on foot or by ATV.
- Pack-Out Efficiency: Harvest an animal deep in the backcountry? Use the current to float your gear and meat back out with less effort and risk.
Hunting Opportunities Near Anchorage & Fairbanks
🏔 Anchorage Area (GMUs 14A, 14B, 13E)
GMU 14A & 14B – These units, located north and northeast of Anchorage, offer float access via the Knik, Matanuska, and Susitna River systems, particularly in late August through early October for moose. The Little Susitna River is a great option for black bear and waterfowl as well.
GMU 13E – Just east of the Parks Highway, GMU 13E includes rivers like the Talkeetna, Chulitna, and Tokositna, which provide excellent moose habitat and are well-suited for multi-day float hunts. Bush plane access is available for deeper trips.
🌲 Fairbanks Area (GMUs 20A, 20B, 20D)
GMU 20A – One of the state’s top-producing moose units. Access the Delta River via the Richardson Highway or a fly-in and float through prime rut territory. Caribou may also be present during open seasons.
GMU 20B – Includes the Tanana and Chena Rivers, which can be accessed near Fairbanks. These are ideal for shorter, weekend float hunts targeting moose, black bear, and waterfowl. The Chena is especially popular for DIY hunters due to its easy put-ins.
GMU 20D – Southeast of Fairbanks, the Delta-Clearwater River is a solid option for moose hunters. Float access provides a quiet and strategic way to reach more remote hunting zones.
Tips for a Successful Float Hunt
-
Plan Your Float Route Carefully
Know your GMU regulations, entry/exit points, and water conditions. We can help recommend rivers based on species, experience level, and time of year. -
Get Familiar with Your Boat
Practice inflating, paddling, and balancing loads before heading out. Our rentals include quality pumps and emergency repair kits. -
Pack Light, Pack Smart
Boats handle weight well, but keep your load balanced and waterproof. Our boats are rated for heavy loads—including game meat, camp gear, and weapons. -
Bear-Proof Your Camp
Use bear-proof containers, hang meat away from camp, and stay alert—especially in prime hunting units where bear activity is high. -
Bring a GPS and Satellite Communicator
Most GMUs are remote and cell service is unreliable. Use GPS waypoints to mark glassing spots, kill sites, and pickup points.
