Meet the Stabicraft 1550 Fisher – The Perfect Aluminum Boat for Exploring Alaska
Share
If you've been looking for a boat that's easy to tow, simple to launch, incredibly safe, and capable of handling Alaska's lakes, rivers, and protected coastal waters, we're excited to introduce the newest addition to the Alaska Wild Rentals fleet—the Stabicraft 1550 Fisher powered by a 50HP outboard.
This boat fills an important role in our lineup. While our inflatable jet boats excel in shallow rivers and remote adventures, the Stabicraft is built for customers who want a traditional aluminum fishing boat that is stable, comfortable, and easy to operate.
Whether you're chasing salmon, exploring hidden lakes, or enjoying a day with the family, the 1550 Fisher is one of the most capable small aluminum boats ever built.
Why We Added the Stabicraft 1550
Not every adventure requires a jet boat.
Many of Alaska's most popular destinations are perfect for a prop-driven aluminum boat. The Stabicraft gives our customers another option that is:
- Easier for first-time boaters
- Extremely stable on the water
- Built from heavy-duty welded aluminum
- Comfortable for fishing or sightseeing
- Affordable to operate
With seating for up to five people and plenty of storage for coolers, camping gear, or fishing equipment, it's an excellent all-around adventure boat. The 1550 Fisher is Stabicraft's best-selling model and is designed around a 50 HP outboard, with capacity for up to 75 HP.
Built for Alaska
Alaska can be rough on boats.
Cold water, rocky shorelines, floating logs, and changing weather demand equipment that can take a beating.
That's exactly why Stabicraft has become one of the most respected aluminum boat manufacturers in the world.
Their signature pontoon-style hull provides incredible stability while adding reserve buoyancy that gives boaters extra confidence on the water. Combined with a fully welded aluminum hull, the 1550 is built to last for years of Alaskan adventures.
Perfect Places to Take It
One of the biggest advantages of the Stabicraft is that it comes on a trailer.
That means you can launch almost anywhere along Alaska's road system.
Some of our favorite destinations include:
Big Lake
Spend the day cruising, tubing, fishing, or simply relaxing with family.
Nancy Lake Recreation Area
Launch nearby and explore one of Alaska's most popular lake systems.
Finger Lake
A local favorite for evening cruises and fishing.
Birch Lake (Fairbanks)
Excellent trout fishing and easy boating.
Quartz Lake
Perfect for camping, trolling, and family weekends.
Seward Harbor
On calm days, the 1550 is an excellent platform for exploring Resurrection Bay, photographing wildlife, and fishing close to shore.
Whittier
Explore protected coves, waterfalls, and glaciers when weather conditions allow.
Great for Fishing
This boat was built with anglers in mind.
It's ideal for:
- Salmon
- Rainbow trout
- Arctic char
- Lake trout
- Dolly Varden
- Northern pike
- Grayling
The wide beam provides plenty of room to cast, while the stable hull makes moving around the boat comfortable—even with multiple people onboard.
Easy to Drive and Easy to Tow
One of the questions we hear most often is:
"I've never driven a boat before. Can I rent one?"
For many customers, the answer is yes.
Compared to larger offshore boats, the Stabicraft 1550 Fisher is very approachable. It handles predictably, launches easily, and responds smoothly to steering inputs. With a thorough orientation before your trip, most first-time renters quickly gain confidence operating it.
It's also one of the easiest boats in our fleet to tow. At just 15½ feet long and riding on a lightweight trailer, the 1550 can be towed by many SUVs and most pickup trucks with ease. Its compact size makes it less intimidating than larger boats, whether you're backing down a launch ramp, parking at a campground, or traveling Alaska's highways. Even if you've never towed a boat before, most customers find the Stabicraft straightforward to handle after a little guidance.
Because it launches so easily, you'll spend less time at the boat ramp and more time on the water. Whether you're headed to Big Lake, Seward, Whittier, or one of Alaska's many roadside lakes, getting there is simple.
Of course, we always recommend staying within your comfort level, monitoring the weather, wearing life jackets whenever you're on the water, and making sure your tow vehicle is properly equipped for the trailer before heading out.
What It Isn't Designed For
While the Stabicraft is incredibly capable, every boat has limits.
The 1550 is not designed for:
- Running shallow braided rivers like a jet boat
- Crossing large open-water bays in rough weather
- Beach landings through heavy surf
- Operating during small craft advisories
Like any small boat, planning around weather and water conditions is part of having a safe trip.
Why Choose the Stabicraft Instead of a Jet Boat?
Our inflatable jet boats are unbeatable when you need to access shallow rivers, gravel bars, or remote areas.
The Stabicraft shines when your trip focuses on:
- Lakes
- Reservoirs
- Protected saltwater
- Easy fishing
- Family outings
- Sightseeing
- Comfortable cruising
For many customers, it's exactly the right tool for the adventure.
